The IBAN (International Bank Account Number) is the standardized international code used to process cross-border money transfers securely between bank accounts within the Single Euro Payments Area (SEPA). In Spain, the mandatory implementation of the IBAN format replaced the old 20-digit CCC (Código Cuenta Corriente) account numbers. Checking that an IBAN is typed correctly before executing a bank transfer is a key security step to prevent funds from being rejected by the sending bank or routed to the wrong recipient due to a typo.

Our calculator functions both as a high-precision IBAN validator and a Spanish IBAN generator starting from a traditional CCC code for 2026. It processes the official algorithms based on the modulo 97 standard and Spanish bank account control calculations. The entire process runs instantly within your browser, ensuring the privacy of your banking details by avoiding internet data transmission.

⚙️ Structure of a Spanish IBAN Code

A Spanish bank account IBAN always consists of 24 characters and follows a fixed structural division:

  • Country code: The first two characters represent the issuing country (for Spain, ES).
  • IBAN check digits: The subsequent two digits (e.g. 91) are calculated via a modulo 97 algorithm to check the overall code for transcription errors.
  • Bank entity code: 4 digits identifying the specific bank (e.g. 2100 for CaixaBank, 0049 for Banco Santander).
  • Branch code: 4 digits indicating the specific bank branch where the account was opened.
  • Control digits (DC): 2 digits verifying the integrity of the bank/branch codes and the account number.
  • Account number: 10 digits unique to the client’s bank account.

📊 Practical Examples of IBAN Structure

Here are two examples demonstrating how Spanish bank accounts are structured in the IBAN format:

Example 1: Bank account at CaixaBank (Entity 2100)
  • CCC details: Bank **2100**, Branch **0418**, Control Digits **40**, Account **1234567890**
  • IBAN check digits calculation: Converting characters yields **91**
  • Full generated IBAN: **ES91 2100 0418 4012 3456 7890**
Status: **Valid ✓** (Verified by the modular validation algorithm).
Example 2: Bank account at Banco Santander (Entity 0049)
  • CCC details: Bank **0049**, Branch **1234**, Control Digits **55**, Account **0987654321**
  • IBAN code to validate: **ES42 0049 1234 5509 8765 4321**
Status: **Valid ✓** (The check digit 42 matches the modulo 97 calculation requirements).

⚠️ Important IBAN Security Tips

1. The IBAN does not verify the account holder’s name

It is a common misconception that a bank transfer will be blocked if the name of the recipient does not match the account details. Spanish banks do not verify whether the name of the recipient matches the owner of the target IBAN, so typos can result in funds being deposited into the wrong account if the IBAN is mathematically valid.

2. Double-check digits before sending money

Before initiating high-value transfers, use a local IBAN validator to rule out copy-paste or typing mistakes. A single wrong character will break the mathematical structure of the IBAN and cause the transaction to fail.

3. Autocalculating the Spanish CCC control digits (DC)

If you only have the entity, branch, and account numbers, do not guess the two control digits. Use the autocalculate feature of our generator to compute the exact control digits required by Spanish banking regulations.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

IBAN lengths vary by country, with a maximum limit of 34 characters. For example, while a Spanish IBAN always has 24 characters, a French IBAN has 27, a German IBAN has 22, and a Maltese IBAN contains 31 characters.

Yes, it is completely safe. Unlike online tools that send your bank account details to a remote server, our validator processes all calculations locally on your device, ensuring maximum privacy.

The BIC or SWIFT code (8 to 11 characters) identifies the bank globally. While it is not required for standard national or SEPA zone transfers (since the IBAN already contains bank identifiers), it remains necessary for international transfers outside the EU.

The calculation involves shifting the first four characters (ES and check digits) to the end of the string, replacing letters with numbers (E=14, S=28), and appending '00'. The resulting number is divided by 97, and the remainder is subtracted from 98 to find the check digits.

An IBAN with spaces (grouped in blocks of four characters) is used for visual readability and manual transcription. For digital processing, database storage, and electronic bank transfers, the IBAN must be entered without any spaces.

If the IBAN is invalid, the target bank will automatically reject the payment and return the funds. If the IBAN is valid but belongs to the wrong person, you must ask your bank to request a reversal, which is subject to approval by the recipient.
