How does the driving points license system work in Spain in 2026, and how long does it take to restore your points balance after a traffic fine? The points-based license system, introduced in Spain by Act 17/2005, penalizes reckless driving by subtracting points from the driver’s total balance. An experienced driver starts with 12 basic points (which can increase to 15 points if they remain infraction-free for three years), while novice drivers start with 8 points. In the event of serious or very serious traffic infractions, the DGT can deduct between 2 and 6 points per day. If you lose points but keep a balance above zero, the recovery period to return to your initial balance is 2 years without committing any further infractions, as unifed by the 2022 Traffic Law Reform. If you have committed speeding violations, you can calculate the points loss using the Speeding Fine Calculator or check general fines with the Traffic Fines Calculator.

🔍 Initial Points Allocation & Good Behavior Bonuses in Spain

The DGT points license system assigns and rewards points based on driving experience and safety records:

  1. Novice Driver Starting Balance (8 points):
    • Every driver who passes their test for the first time starts with 8 points. This balance is kept for the first two years of driving.
  2. Standard Driver Balance (12 points):
    • After the first two years pass without any point-deductible infractions, your balance is automatically increased to 12 points.
  3. Good Behavior Bonuses (Up to 15 points):
    • If you drive for 3 years without any fines, your balance increases by 2 points (to 14 points). After another 3 years without sanctions, you receive 1 more point, reaching the absolute maximum limit of 15 points.

📝 Worked Examples

Example 1: General driver with partial points loss for phone usage

Profile: Carlos, an experienced driver with 12 points, is fined 6 points for holding a mobile phone in his hand while driving.

Partial Points Loss Calculation
  • Starting balance: 12 points | Infraction: Holding mobile phone in hand
  • Points deducted: 6 points | Remaining balance: 12 − 6 = 6 points
  • Full recovery period: 2 consecutive years without committing any further point-deductible infractions.
Status: Active | Remaining points: 6 points | Recovery period: 2 years

Example 2: Novice driver with total points loss (License Revoked)

Profile: Laura, a novice driver with a starting balance of 8 points, accumulates a 6-point alcohol fine and a 2-point speeding fine.

Total Points Loss Calculation (Revocation)
  • Starting balance: 8 points | Accumulated infractions: 6 points + 2 points = 8 points lost
  • Remaining balance: 0 points | Status: License revoked (pérdida de vigencia)
  • Reinstatement procedure: Wait out a 6-month driving ban, complete a mandatory 24-hour road safety awareness course, and pass a theoretical traffic exam.
Status: Revoked | Remaining points: 0 points | Reinstated balance: 8 points

Example 3: Good behavior bonus accumulation

Profile: Albert, who has not committed any traffic infractions for 8 years, maintains a clean safety record.

Bonus Points Accumulation
  • Base balance: 12 points | Years infraction-free: 8 years
  • Bonuses accumulated: +2 points (first 3 years) + 1 point (following 3 years) = 3 bonus points
  • Current balance: 15 points (absolute maximum allowed in Spain).
Status: Active | Remaining points: 15 points (Excellent)

⚠️ 4 Common Mistakes for Drivers

  1. Assuming points can be lost indefinitely in a single day: This is a common misunderstanding. Under Spanish law, a driver cannot lose more than 8 points in a single day for accumulated infractions, unless they commit very serious infractions (such as drunk driving, refusing a test, reckless driving, or driving the wrong way), in which case points are deducted cumulatively without any daily limit.
  2. Believing points recovery time depends on infraction severity: Previously, recovery periods were 3 years for very serious infractions and 2 years for serious ones. The 2022 reform unified this: it takes exactly 2 years without infractions to restore your full initial balance, regardless of the severity of the ticket that caused the points loss.
  3. Thinking paying the fine avoids the points deduction: Paying a traffic fine quickly to get the 50% pronto pago discount does not save your points. Once you pay the fine or let the appeal deadline pass, the fine becomes final and the points are permanently deducted from your DGT file.
  4. Expecting to take partial recovery courses every year: General drivers can only take a partial recovery course (recovering up to 6 points) once every 2 years. Only professional drivers (truck, bus, or taxi drivers) are permitted to take these points-recovery courses annually.

🏠 Special Scenarios in Spain

DGT Safe and Efficient Driving Courses

The latest Spanish traffic reform introduced an alternative way to recover points: completing a certified safe and efficient driving course. Passing one of these practical and theoretical training courses automatically adds 2 points to your license, provided your current balance is positive and below the 15-point limit.

Professional Driver License Reinstatement

For drivers who rely on their vehicle for work (such as delivery drivers, truck drivers, or taxi drivers), a license suspension is a critical career threat. Spanish law reduces the mandatory waiting period to retake the exam after a license revocation from 6 months to 3 months for professional drivers on their first offense.

📋 What This Means for You

If you are a novice driver

Be aware that you start with a vulnerable balance of 8 points. Committing a single serious infraction like holding a mobile phone without a mount (6 points) or driving under the influence will leave you on the brink of losing your license and having to retake the theoretical driving exam.

If you have a low points balance (e.g. 2 or 4 points remaining)

Do not wait until you lose your license. Book a partial points recovery course (12 hours) at a DGT-approved driving school. This course costs about €200 but will restore up to 6 points to your balance immediately without requiring any final exam.

❓ Frequently Asked Questions (FAQ)

You can check your points balance for free in real-time by downloading the DGT mobile app (miDGT), or by accessing the DGT electronic headquarters using Cl@ve Pin, a digital certificate, or a Spanish electronic ID (DNIe).

Completing a partial points recovery course at an authorized DGT training school allows you to recover up to a maximum of 6 points, up to your initial maximum limit (normally 12 or 15 points).

If your points balance reaches zero, the DGT will notify you of the loss of validity of your license. You must surrender your physical license, you cannot drive for 6 months, and you must pass a 24-hour course and a theory exam to recover it.

You must drive for 2 consecutive years without committing any infractions that result in points loss. After this period, your balance will automatically return to 12 points.

The maximum points limit in Spain is 15 points. You can reach this balance by driving for 6 consecutive years without any traffic sanctions after having attained the base balance of 12 points.

Violations that deduct 6 points include driving under the influence of alcohol over 0.50 mg/L, refusing a breathalyzer test, reckless driving, driving in the wrong direction, using radar blockers, or holding a mobile phone in hand.

If you reside in Spain and hold a Spanish or registered EU license, you lose points. If you are a tourist with a foreign license, the DGT assigns a virtual points account; if it reaches zero, you are banned from driving in Spain.

No. DGT regulations explicitly state that points can only be deducted from a driving license if the violation was committed while operating a vehicle that requires a driving license to be legally driven.
